Dr. Northrup Attends Graduation | Mama Gena Moments

March 9th, 2006

Darlings!!

I cannot remember the last time I was rendered speechless. Can you?

Two Tuesdays ago, my very last 101 class had its graduation. In the class was a beautiful, articulate young woman named Kate who was there because her extraordinary sister, Ann, had recommended the course to her and a gang of her closest friends. Kate jumped up onstage to brag and introduced her guests, which included her aunt, some friends, her Mom.

Who was her Mom?
Dr. Christiane Northrup.
Talk about a moment.

To be in the same room with this woman who has brought so much to my life personally and the lives of women all over the world, knocked me flat out.

When I was very first writing my very first book, I would read and re-read through page 14 of her first book because I knew there was a woman out there who “got it.”

So I was face to face with my inspiration.

And the exquisite act of espionage that she had so carefully arranged took my breath away. She read my books last summer and was so inspired by them that she sent her daughter Ann to take the class and spy for her. She said that the results she saw in Ann were so phenomenal that she gifted the course to her daughter Kate and their friend/almost daughter Ellen, her niece Rachel, and their friends Kacey and Janine jumped in.

Everyone had to promise not to reveal the secret.

Because of Dr. Northrup's love for these young women, I had the privilege of falling in love with each of them without the interference of her legend. And that was a great Mama to Mama gift from she to me.

Dr. N leapt up onto the stage to talk about her Mata Hari-like undercover adventure.

Dr. N said that as she was researching sex for a re-write to her books, Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause that she encountered my books. She could not believe what she was reading. Dr. N said I had changed her cleaning lady's life with the first book. And that she gives my books out to every woman who she believes is ready to accept the gift of a more pleasurable life.

Dr. N said that as someone trained by the patriarchy, she was looking at the subject of sex from a patriarchal point of view. She said that my work, especially Owner's and Operator’s Guide to Men, turned that upside down for her and she realized that science absolutely backs my concepts. After her training in medical school, she knew the egg sat around the ovary waiting for the sperm, who flail and run like mad around her, and that there is no direction for the sperm without the egg to guide them—but she never realized that that precise biological phenomenon is also true outside the womb, reflected with precision in every cell of a woman's body and the universe.
She said she had it all ass-backwards and was home cooking dinner for her husband three hours after she gave birth to her daughter, thinking it was her job to serve him. (Can we not all relate to that?)

To have Dr. N describe to me how science backs my concepts was a really big deal for me. It felt like what it must be like for a Catholic to get a Papal blessing. Or for Marie Curie to get a Nobel prize.

My heroine said I was a genius.
She said my work was part of the solution to preventing and curing cancer.

Why?

Because over the years, she has come to see that cancer is a sign that we need to grow in new and healthier ways. She quoted Dr. Lewis Thomas, former director of Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital who said, "I have come to believe that cancer is the physical metaphor for the extreme need to grow." Dr. N said that cancer is often a consequence of dreams and desires that do not get expressed and therefore start to eat away at the body. She said that I encouraged women to live their dreams and desires, which creates health.

For me this was a dream I did not know I had—come true.
I never thought I required anyone's blessing.
So many people have such strong responses to me and my work that I forgot that I desired it.

But to receive this acknowledgement from a woman who has been so pivotal in my life—and to realize that this woman who had—without knowing it—inspired me—I was now inspiring—has exploded my heart with a recognition of the conspiracy of love and Sister Goddesshood which surrounds each of us, all the time, whether or not we realize it.

I feel spiritually changed by this.

I feel like I am living the creation of a Matriarchy. Where the community of Sister Goddesshood extends to every woman who recognizes it, every woman who wants the inspiration of other women, every woman who desires to live her dreams.

Our own recognition of who we are is the price of admission.

And that is the design of my brand-new Mastery Program—giving a woman the ability to ongoingly recognize who she is and re-organize her reality around her new reflection.

I feel flooded with a new enthusiasm. Charged with the electrical voltage of the cosmic link between desire and reality—I am looking so forward to exploring it, intensifying it and giving it to you.

Yours in ever-expanding pleasure—
Mama Gena
